10 Must-Have Baby Products For First Time Moms
Ready to hold your Newborn but don’t know what to get?
Check out my Top 10 Must-Have Newborn Essentials that every Mom should have at home!
The second trimester with my first Baby just started and let me tell you, it’s getting stressful. No matter how often I go to the store or look online, I always find new baby products that promise easier parenthood.
As a first time mom, you don’t really know if those products are really as necessary as they are trying to sell you. Most of the time, I just feel overwhelmed by the dimension of baby products out there! Even if you reduce the number of products you are planning to get, there are so many brands that promise to be the best offer.
So instead of looking online for lists of what I need, I asked the people that should know best! MOMS! Lucky me, I already know a lot of Mommies that were in the same situation before and happy to help.
Today I will share my essential baby shopping list with you!
1. Baby Crib
Newborns sleep A LOT, typically up to 16-17 hours a day. That being said, your Baby should have a nice sleeping spot ready after arrival! We actually skipped the baby bassinet and went straight to a normal-sized baby crib. You can get those at any baby store or online.
We got our bed as well as a mattress at our Ikea Store. Depending on your budget, there are many great options out there. Here are just a few of them:
2. Changing Table / Dresser
Newborns typically urinate 20 times a day for the first couple of months. Don’t forget about the pooping part! So it’s self-explanatory that you will be changing some diapers, which should be happening at least every 1-3 hours. We decided to get an actual dresser with a changing table topper for our nursery.
Once the child is old enough, we can just remove the top and keep using the dresser. Our dresser is, again, from Ikea. The actual changing topper came from Amazon. Here are some more options:
3. Portable Changing Station
Since we will be spending the majority of our time in our living room, I actually don’t want to walk all the way to our bedroom just to quickly change a wet diaper.
So I went to the store, got myself a cute looking basket, and filled it up with Diapers, Wipes, and Butt Cream. So whenever our baby needs a fresh diaper, I can just get one out of the caddy and change the diaper right away without leaving the room.
There are tons of options out there:
4. Stroller & Car Seat
I will sum up those two products since they kind of go together. If you are looking for a stroller or car seat, there are a million options out there and every single one promises to be the best. It will probably overwhelm you, especially if you are on a tight budget.
We weren’t planning on spending tons of money on a stroller since it just seemed unnecessary. Most of the time, you are paying for the brand name than the actual quality.
Our stroller was recommended to us by my sister. She got that one for both of her baby boys and the quality in combination with the price was very good. We only paid around 240€ / 260$. We also decided to get the same car seat, my sister used, which was under 100€ / 115$.
So if you are looking for inexpensive alternatives to the Big-Brands, check out these options:

5. Baby Swing
To be honest, I was kind of debating if I should get a swing for our baby or not. Sure, it is not one of the indispensable baby products, but I liked the idea of it.
Especially if you are dealing with a baby who needs a lot of attention and can only fall asleep while being rocked. You would be able to prepare dinner or get some work done around the house while your baby is comfortably swinging around and hopefully sleeping.
Some babies love it, some hate it. I decided to get a budget-friendly swing just to give it a try. Here are some options for you:
6. Baby Carrier
Pushing a stroller around everywhere I go seems pretty inconvenient to me. So finding an alternative that keeps my baby close but my hands-free is definitely a must-have for me. A baby carrier or sling seemed like the perfect solution, so I did a quick research about it and found some great options on Amazon.
7. Pump & Bottles
This one depends on your feeding style. Right now, I am actually planning to breastfeed. But since it’s going to be my first baby, I don’t know if that is going to work out for us or not. Time will tell. However, a lot of breastfeeding moms I know actually had to pump once in a while. Either to empty their boobies or to build up a stock.
During my research, I came across two different pump-options. You can either get an electric or manual pump. Since I don’t know how often I am going to need it, I decided to get a manual pump. I also found some good bottles for my pumped breastmilk that can be perfectly used for formula as well.
Here are a few different options for you:
8. Clothes, Diapers + Wipes
Probably the most obvious items on my list. I actually wrote a whole post dedicated to Baby Clothing, what to get, to consider, and to renounce. So make sure to check that one out.
Depending on your decision regarding the use of diapers, there are many great deals on Amazon for the normal disposable ones, as well as for the cloth-option.
We decided to start with the disposable diapers by Pampers. But I made sure to list some of the other brands and cloth-diapers for you as well:
Since Cloth Diapers are much more eco-friendly, we are considering switching once our Baby is a little older. Here is a Great Article in case you want to know more about it.
9. Baby Monitor
One major product I absolutely wanted to have is a baby monitor. Whenever our baby is taking a nap, I still want to be able to see what’s going on and make sure the sleeping position is safe, especially when it comes to breathing.
There are many products on the market that you can even connect with your smartphone, but I found that a separate monitor works better for us. Whenever I am on my phone while our baby is sleeping, I can still have the monitor visible at all times. If you are using your phone and are getting distracted by social media, you may forget to look at the monitor for a longer period of time. Your phone battery may also run out, so you eventually have to charge it more often.
Just take those facts under consideration when choosing the right baby monitor for your needs. I still decided to list both options for you:
10. Newborn Care-Kit
Honestly, as a first-time mom, I had no idea what kind of baby care products my newborn will need. Whenever I went to the baby section at any store, I noticed brushes, clippers, and a bunch of other stuff. It really overwhelmed me.
So I went on Amazon, looked for Baby-Healthcare-Kits, and immediately decided to get one. There is a variety of sets out there that include all the essential baby-care-products you probably won’t have at home as a first time mom.
- Baby Brush and Comb
- Baby Clipper, File, and Scissors
- Baby Finger Toothbrush
- Baby Nose Care Set
- Baby Thermometer for Fever and Water Temperature
Amazon offers a bunch of different colors and themes:
I really hope I was able to help you find a way through that Chaos of Baby Products.
